At one point in its resto-pub existence, the South Philadelphia Tap Room did not have a tofu-less menu. That has changed.
Currently, your veg options are narrowed down to asparagus salad, hummus, spring rolls, a quesadilla, grilled cheese, and ravioli. You look bored already. These are all stand-bys that you can find at most places, or easily fix for yourself. Oh wait, beer.
Yes, beer. That's why we're here.
The grilled cheese was frontin' as a Queso sandwich. I saw the word jalapeƱo and didn't mind, then bitched about my mouth burning and my inability to taste anything at all except pepper. I can't even tell you if there was cheese on this thing. I wasn't thrilled with the bun it was served on and would have preferred some challah or sourdough. Luckily, I tore up some of a hummus appetizer and did not need to complete this painful bun-wich.
Look, I'm only asking for a little something inventive.

SPTR *used* to be my favorite philly bar. Now, the vegan options suck or are non-existent, they serve fois gras, and the prices have been jacked up over time. No thanks.
Even though SPTR is close to my house, I'll gladly walk the extra distance or take the subway to get to places in Center City or the South Street area.
They just got a new head chef. The old one (who was largely responsible for the dwindling veg options) is out. Their menu is going to slowly change over the next month or so and *should* include a lot more veg stuff. Yay! This is very exciting.
I've dined on the new menu twice and both times have been disappointed. I still don't get why on earth you would serve all sandwiches on english muffins. English muffins!? The SPTR is surrounded if not mobbed by great classic south philly italian bakeries that deliver fresh crusty bread every morning and they decide to serve your sandwiches on english muffins!? They would serve better as coasters or mini dog frisbees. The battered zucchini are way too big and sloppily done, looking more like big moon rocks. The frito pie is served in its own bag in an attempt to be creative. The cheese on the vegetarian chili was clumped together and not melted nearly enough. I described the new menu to my dining partner as trailer park gourmet. The dishes are inspired but the execution is heavy handed and lacks attention to detail. If i go to the SPTR again it will be for the beer and nothing else.
The new menu rocks. Over 1/3 of the menu is veg items. Im not a veg but my gf is and she loves all the new choices. Don't listen to the moron above. He/she must have a personal problem with someone at the taproom because they have posted the exact same thing word for word on over 10 foodie sites. Trust me, the new Chef and the new menu rock.
