Postcards from an Unfortunate Lunch

I prefer being involved in my lunch a little. Implicated to a point that extends beyond the currency in my palm. That means abstaining from meals on campus because they're all based on refined carbs and mystery condiments. Since I didn't prep a few days worth of tempeh hoagies to get me by, I found myself wandering the Temple cafeteria in the Student Activity Center, a place I've been to all of 5 times. It's where tastebuds go to be removed.

No, I don't want the crepe truck. I've been a student here for the past 3 years. I've had enough.

But American Dog? Must be new, because it wasn't here the last desperate time I dropped by.

Chicago dogs? Texas Tommy's? Tater tots? An Atlanta dog with mac & cheese? Oh yes, veggie dog. I can do you.

I seized a Berkeley, clad in onion, cucumber, tomato, and jalapenos, for $3.69. I passed on tots. I'm a fifth year senior. My self-restraint is well established. Lunch is not the highlight of my day. Dinner is.

Would I go American again? No. Not when I know what comes out of the LOTV kitchen is a million times better/cheaper/healthier and doesn't make me feel dirty. Sleaze is all good if it arrives in proximity to tempeh.

I go to Temple, too. I was curious about that hot dog. Good to know it isn't so great. When I'm desperate, I get a hummus pita from the Green Truck, which is sadly not that green. Or, a Moshe's faux turkey pita from 7-11. Have you checked out the other cafeteria, J&H? I went once, but I didn't realize you have to pay first before you even get in. So I paid $6 for some fruit salad and chips and salsa. There is a vegetarian area, but the guy said they weren't open yet. Maybe I went at the wrong time? Oh well. Is there anywhere else vegan-friendly on campus?

I also get the hummus pita sometimes, but there's never enough hummus and too much vinaigrette. The Moshe's are pretty boring now, and I try to stay out of the 7-Eleven. That other cafeteria has soy cheese and a fake cheesesteak sometimes, but again, too much money, not enough goodness.

I guess most of my frustration stems from the fact that just because we're students, doesn't mean we have to eat like students...

So I think we both need to start bringing chickpea tagine from last night's dinner with us.

I do recommend the tofu teppanyaki from the Japanese truck on 12th. Here are some other links:

I went to Temple/now work at Temple and I have to say the veg selections are weak - especially when you need a quick lunch. if you have time and a little cash, qdoba's not bad. The vegetarian chili at the draft horse is $5 and actually excellent. good, since it's pretty much the only thing i can eat there. i wish J&H had anything remotely healthy when i lived on campus - i wasn't a vegetarian then, but the food was gross. i haven't been back since i moved out of the dorms.

i'd love a chinese place with good mock meats - all i've had on campus is sad, soggy tofu.

Oooh, I always forget about Draft Horse, but I'll give that a shot next time.

Lately I've been drinking Naked Juice as a meal, from the B&N cafe. They also have those vegan cookies from Alternative Baking, which aren't too bad.
