Game Changer: Red Pie at Zavino.

I haven't had a slice of pizza with cheese since that last night of Thai pizza on whole wheat crust from Home Slice. And it's been vegan pizza (surprising easy to find in Philly these days) since that.

We end up at Zavino on evenings when we least expect it. I remembered seeing a marinara pie on Zavino's pizza menu a few months back, when we first tried the 13th St. pizzeria. Well, they may not advertise it anymore, but don't be afraid to ask.

A few minutes after I placed an order at the bar for a marinara pie, they slid it out of the oven and in front of us, char in the right places, sweet sauce and slivers of roasted garlic. For a quick bite on a cold evening when we had not made dinner plans, this was a sharp, thin-crusted relief.

Other dairy-free pie alternatives?

Tomato Pie at Sweet Freedom Bakery (call ahead, gluten-free)
Almond Cheese Pizza at Home Slice (call ahead, sometimes they run out, whole wheat dough available, tons of veggie options, review here)
Vegan Gourmet Mozzarella at Slice (whole wheat dough available, review here)
Daiya Pizza by the Pie or Slice at Ed's
Daiya, Tomato, or Potato Pizza at Blackbird Pizza (all vegan, good luck trying to make a decision, review here)
Daiya Pizza at Whole Foods (review here)
Daiya Pizza at Carmens
Vegan Tofu Pie at Dock St Brewery (review here)

Chime in if you have any others. As far as I have been told, all of these pies are vegan. There is some sugar in Zavino's dough.

Ahh that pie looks good. Good synapses of vegan pie in the city too :) Seems like not too long ago it was a bit harder to find a legit slice.

I know at Garces Trading Company you can get the tomato deep dish that is made with a cornmeal crust **note the thin crust has duck fat** and I have talked to Barbuzzo and they can make a vegan pizza as well. Maybe we should head to both restaurants soon and see what theyre not working with!

That is good to know about Garces Trading Co, it was upsetting to hear about the duck fat incident.

Let's make plans for Barbuzzo, I am dying to go. We tried there before Zavino but they were packed. I know they have a veggie board and I will call to find out what else is vegan.

Can you please?

We are flexible this weekend and next week is definitely cool.

I have a feeling you are going to tell me that the almond milk polenta without taleggio is a no go?

Aren't you loving the vegan food scene that's taking off in Philly! Hopefully more Horizons and all vegan, NY-type vegan restaurants will start popping up as well.

This year has been huge for vegan restaurants. I couldn't be happier about it. I am still waiting for a raw cafe with a crazy juice bar, but we'll see...

Pizzeria Stella on 2nd and Lombard makes a tasty marinara pizza with red sauce, basil, and juicy sliced garlic.
